Below are select pictures from the many Motor Baby Detroit Crawl events since Spring 2001,
ranging from dinners, summer picnics, and club parties. Enjoy. ...
On Monday, March 20, The Crawl celebrated its fifth anniversary on this great big Internet of ours
at Buzz Bar, 546 Larned, right near the Greektown District. As well the party was also the release party for Prince's
new musical opus 3121. We all had a great time reaching this milestone in the fan club and we hope to have
many more parties at our new home away from home - our monthly Prince Music Nights. Hey DJ Ben! Props 'n' Pounds to Adam!
4 additional pix from the September 2002 event, say hello 2 fellow motor babies, The Fergusons.
On Saturday, January 19, 2001, TheDetroitCrawl invited all of its Motor Babies to its second
"Dinner with Detroit," at Fishbone's Rhythm Kitchen Cafe, across the street from Marilyn's on Monroe in
Greektown. After the dinner, we crossed the street over to Marilyn's, and partied the rest of the nite away. We were
able to convince the resident deejay to spin 30-some minutes of the January 2002 NPG Music Club Ahdio Show # 11,
crafted by DJ Dudley D at The Park. Little did we know that six months later we would return to Marilyn's on Monroe for
the first (and hopefully many) All Prince Music themed nights.
After a 120-day break to soak in the rays of the sun of the Summer of 2001,
TheDetroitCrawl and its Motor Babies went back inside Carbon Lounge in Hamtramck for a little bit of
experimentation. The end result - a funky night with little light. We asked everyone who attended to dress
appropriately to help capture the essence of the mainly black-lit club that seemed to cast a warm purple fuzztone.
But when you get right down to it the night turned into one that we are all used to - grooving and jamming and
breaking a sweat to many of the old paisley joints and new NPGMC funk we all know and love.
We got to thinking back when we were starting out this little web site and organization - "What are
we going to do for June 7?" We were not too sure if Celebration 2001 was on, so we were cautious. "How
about inviting all the Motor Babies up north for a night out of Interactive fun at Gameworks?" And so, the date
was set in stone. Everything worked out great, well, except for the day of the week - a Thursday. A handful of us Motor Babies
staved off the grueling late evening Detroit Metro traffic and made it out to Great Lakes Crossing in Auburn Hills. Wow, was it
ever a hike, but we all had a blast once we arrived, with our NPG hockey jerseys in tow. And ladies played free for most of
the night, which was an added bonus. Enjoy the varied snaps as some of us tried to be fake Wendys and Lisas and Brownmarks
on the air guitar.
The Detroit Crawl hosted its first-ever club event on Sunday,
May 20, 2001, at Carbon Lounge in Hamtramck. We really didn't know what to expect, although we had a feeling the
freaks would come out of the closet. And did they ever. Romulus' own
Rare Form set the night into motion with a performance that would not stop. Although they
played some of their original tunes, Paul and his band fleshed out the joint with
Prince classics Purple Rain, Rasberry Beret, Controversy, Uptown, Party Up, Sexy MF and
The Max. Rare Form ended an hour and 15-minute set with a medley that stretched back to 1979.
We never knew a band could polish up a joint like Lady Cab Driver.
The Dance Electric was filled with the then new NPGMC joints and selected cutz from
Rave In2 The Joy Fantastic. Local radio and TV personalities Charles Pugh of
Fox2 News and Alex Dupri of 105.9FM JAMZ were spotted.
On the last Saturday of April in 2001 we extended an open invitation
for all Motor Babies to come out for a little meet-and-greet dinner at the famed
downtown Detroit restaurant, Intermezzo. The party name was under
"Delores," a little play on words from
's
1996 "Chaos & Disorder." When we were brainstorming back in late February 2001, the restaurant
Intermezzo was brought up. We wanted to kick off the organization with a cool splash, some nice way to say
hello to all Motor Babies out there. Then we dug a little bit deeper with the help of
Prince.Org to locate stories about
Prince/
's visits there.
One of the most detailed reports was found on
The Paisley Park Mailing List. PPML #453 was posted on Sunday, October 19, 1997,
by Michelle (I HAVE DIED AND GONE TO HEAVEN!) detailing an after-performance jam with
Stevie Wonder, Kat Dyson and Larry Graham during then-wife Mayte's NPG Dance
Company stop at the Music Hall (across the street).
Seven purpleheads from Detroit Metro showed up and had a great time getting
aquainted with each other. We all had stories to tell and the vibe was flowing all night long. We met one of
the waiters, Vinnie, who "almost" took care of Prince November 2000 during the first leg of the
Hit n' Run tour. Yes, we said almost. It seems that someone from the touring camp called Intermezzo earlier in the
day and said Prince would be around for a late bite to eat, but it never worked out. Vinnie said he was pissed
because he was the waiter on-call for the late-night snack. Instead Prince went to the now-closed Blue Nile near Belle Isle
and then onto Pure for the afterparty.
All in all we had a great time and we hope to do it again soon. It was also interesting that we technically
sat at the head table, the same table that a few high-profile dignitaries have sat at. There is a picture of former
Detroit mayor Dennis Archer with then Vice-President Al Gore hanging on a side wall of the same table we sat at.
C-O-O-L. One other musing, all of the menu prices were like Madhouse joint numbers -- Three, Four, Ten, Sixteen, etc.
Pretty funny. Wonder if Prince gained some inspriation back in 1986 and 1987 when he was putting 8 and 16 together?
